A Legacy of Luxury: The Story Behind The Villas at Stonehaven

From a colonial cocoa estate to a sanctuary of elegance and nature

Tucked away on Tobago’s lush western coast, The Villas at Stonehaven are more than a luxurious escape—they are a living story of heritage, architecture, and ecological preservation. From the echoes of a colonial cocoa estate to the refined elegance of French-inspired villas, every corner of Stonehaven whispers history.

From Cocoa Estate to Wildlife Sanctuary

Long before the infinity pools and ocean views, the land that now hosts The Villas at Stonehaven was part of the historic Grafton Cocoa Estate—a thriving plantation during Tobago’s colonial era. The estate played a vital role in the island’s agricultural economy, producing high-quality cocoa that was exported across the Caribbean and Europe.

But in 1963, everything changed. Hurricane Flora, one of the most devastating storms in Tobago’s history, tore through the island, flattening forests and displacing countless species of wildlife. Among the most affected were the island’s vibrant bird populations.

Moved by compassion, estate owner Eleanor Alefounder began feeding the displaced birds—a simple act of kindness that blossomed into something extraordinary. Over time, this effort evolved into the Grafton Bird Sanctuary, a protected haven for Tobago’s native and migratory birds.

Eleanor’s vision didn’t stop there. She ensured that 260 acres of adjoining forest would remain untouched, preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of the area. Today, guests at The Villas at Stonehaven can still hear the melodic calls of tropical birds echoing through the trees—a living tribute to Eleanor’s enduring love for Tobago’s wildlife.

Inspired by Colonial Elegance

The transformation of the estate into a luxury villa resort was guided by the artistic vision of Arne Hasselqvist, a Swedish architect renowned for his work in the Caribbean. Hasselqvist was no stranger to tropical elegance—his portfolio included the iconic Mandalay Estate on Mustique, designed for none other than David Bowie.

Drawing inspiration from 18th-century French colonial architecture, Hasselqvist envisioned a resort that would blend seamlessly with Tobago’s historical and tropical landscape. His designs emphasized open-air living, natural materials, and panoramic views—creating a sense of timeless serenity.

Each villa was meticulously crafted using materials sourced from around the world:

  • Rich hardwoods from Guyana
  • Hand-forged bronze hardware from Peru
  • Polished granite and marble from Brazil
  • Elegant Italian floor tiles that cool the feet on warm Caribbean days

The result is a harmonious blend of old-world charm and modern luxury, where every detail—from the archways to the verandas—tells a story.

A Dream Realized

Construction of The Villas at Stonehaven began in the late 1990s, a labor of love that spanned three years. The resort officially opened its doors in 2000, marked by a champagne celebration attended by descendants of the original estate owners and local dignitaries.

During construction, workers often spoke of a mysterious presence—a white horse seen galloping through the grounds, believed to be the spirit of Eleanor Alefounder watching over her beloved land. Whether folklore or fact, the story adds a mystical layer to the resort’s rich history.

Tragically, Arne Hasselqvist passed away in a fire in the Bahamas just two weeks after the grand opening. His legacy, however, lives on in every architectural detail, every sweeping view, and every moment of peace experienced by guests.
